Knowing where the bait is can be tricky. Birds are one clue. Working shrimp boats is another. If there are shrimp boats in the channel, there is bait in the channel, otherwise, they wouldn't be working.

If you have sonar, you can learn to recognize what different kinds of bait look like on your sonar, but it takes experience. For many years in Colorado reservoirs, we ignored the fish on the sonar and focused on keeping our lures at depths and locations where there was bait. It was very effective.

At the jetties, the sonar tells me that there are bait and fish everywhere, so I usually just put baits out and wait for the bulls.
