I have encouraged my son to take a path in his kayak that uses the least effort. If the chop is a lot lighter or the current is slower along a bank, I have encouraged him to hug the bank. I think I would do the same thing. Rather than beat myself up fighting waves or current in the middle of a channel, I'd take the easier path along the bank. If that brings me too close to your fishing, tough turnips. Navigation trumps fishing every time, especially in a paddled craft.
