I think he means that other people will not let a man/woman in uniform buy his own drink, it's a great feeling when someone has done that to me in the past.
I made an old guy cry the other day, I was at Wal. Mart and saw an old Ranger wearing his Beret Proud, I took my kids up to him and introduced ourselves and told him I wanted my kids to meet a HERO, he thanked me and gave me a real firm handshake, and excused hisself he had tears in his eyes. When we left my son asked me why that HERO was crying, I told him that not enough people know what a true HERO is, and they need to know that they are appreciated for their Sacrifice. So yeah tell a soldier thanks, buy him/her a drink, or just talk to him/her.
