dog food for your retrievers
 

What do ya'll feed your working retrievers? During season and off? and amount of food? Just curious as far as protein and fats you feed and brand and if you change during season or not. I use PMI 26/16 out of season its about 30$ per 50#(offseason) 4 cups, during season I use PMI Exclusive Performance 30/20 its 43$ per 35# and 3 cups during the week and 4 cups day before hunts.

I use diamond year around but I use a automatic feeder Probly why my dogs look like cows

the green bag I used to feed some cheap stuff but my chocalate started loosing his color so I switched

lol his color came back vet said the food didn't have enough oil in it he also said to feed them sardines every now and then to help his coat

Feed mine science diet, its expensive but i could tell a huge difference in his energy and coat when i switched away from purina

maybe thats whats wrong with my dogs color. My chocolat lab will turn blonde in late spring and shed something awful for a few months. It comes off in patches, sometimes she looks like an obese hyena. Might hafta get her a few sardines

I fed mine Purina One for sensitive systems. He didn't get the runs, his energy was
always high, his coat was beautiful. It has Salmon as the main protein ingredient.
It smelled bad, but he loved it. It was high, but not as expensive as Science Diet.
I fed it to him year round.

I just feed my big girl purina dog chow.

Just add Tuna
 

Add 1 or 2 cans tuna in oil once a week and they will keep a shiny and very healthy coat no matter what kind of food you use.

the dog is most likely losing its coat due to an allergic reaction to corn. those cheap dog foods use corn as a main filler. most animals not even humans (check the toilet) can digest corn. i would check into a better brand of dog food for a working dog. i have always fed Nutro but Diamond is a pretty good brand as well. Check the first 5 ingredients that is 95% of the dog food. If corn is on the top 5 I would stay away. I managed a multi-million dollar pet store for 7 years so I learned a lot about dog food.

R little, do you feed 30/20 year round? Someone was telling me that the high protein is bad for their livers, that I should only feed it during hunting season.

Diamond Premium, year round. Lab gets 1/2 gallon a day during fall/winter. Jags get about 10ozs. day. Those little buggers are easy keep!

hafta check into that. I dont hunt my girl any more since shes had back problems. Shes 9 yrs. old now,and fat like a heifer. dont feed her too much,shes just on the lazy side.lol Say like that big woman, Im not fat,just fluffy.

My dogs train year round and they eat the same food year round. Fat is what I am looking for in a food, protein is second. Seems like alot you you are over feeding your hounds. More is not always better.

If you get a food high in fat, be sure not to get a bag that is too big.
High fat food will mold/mildew faster of not sealed off good.

mine was on science diet for a few months. then i got the hook up with a friend from petco with royal cannin. She loves it.

I would think this would be a bigger concern during the summer.

If kept outside......Generally speaking, what would be too long to keep an opened bag of high fat dog food?
