I heard Clays son started building them again. The 1550 is a good boat, my uncle still has one with a mega 25 (40 mph top speed). They had problems with floors getting soft, but i've been told the issue was fixed. My dad had a 17x42 for years, he cut the floor after it got soft, dug the foam out, then glassed a cable tray in as a make shift stringer system.
They ride a little softer and quieter, fish a lot quieter than aluminum. If you have to buy a new engine, choices are pretty much a 50 TLDI and that's the only short shaft tiller left.
