The new coil will be rated for the new compressors/condensing units.
If you change out the outside unit, you will have to change out the inside coil also.
But you can change out the inside coil and nothing else, if that is what you want to do.
The outside unit is what costs so much to run. I wouldn't worry about it till you need to change it out.
However, none of these components will ever go down in price. If you get them both now, it might save you money over getting it later. Also, if you do a complete change out, it is normally a lil cheaper to do when it is cooler and there is a lot more competition for work. It is a lot slower when it cools down.
When it is hot like now, everyone is booked up with calls. To change out the unit, you might pay a premium price.
