If you can safely run your boat at a fast idle, you don't need anything on your line. The drag on the bare line will bend your rod like a 16" red. The last 10 or 15 yards will need a little finger pinch for pressure but that's all. Having a lure on your line will get the line wound on tight, but you won't get the twist out of your line. Try it without a lure, but be careful. If you let all of your line out at a really fast idle it will try to take the rod out of your hands. I never would have believed it could create so much drag on the bare line till I tried it myself.
As for Stren, there's a reason why it's known for abrasion resistance. It's like piano wire compared to Trilene Dig Game. Great on offshore reels you don't have to cast, but I hate it on a baitcaster.
