Under easy tracking conditions, I really like the solid copper Barnes bullets. They will expand and exit and leave a good blood trail. Penetration will never fail to be adequate.
But (you may have noticed), there are a lot of swamps and snakes and tough tracking situations in our fair state. For those deals, I prefer a jacketed lead bullet that offers some fragmentation while still likely to penetrate well. The 60 grain Nosler Partition is a good choice.
But in the .223 world, it's more a matter of avoiding the bad choices: varmint bullets, FMJ, steel core. It's also a matter of hitting what you aim at. Put a good bullet in the center of the chest and take home your venison.
