Everyone should carry a "Cheap" aluminum fish stringer in their boat for just this purpose. Tie the chain to your line, open all the snap hooks on the stringer and go to dragging.

Being aluminum, if you get hung on oysters, rocks, junk etc. the snap hooks will straighten out with 20# test line...Been using this set-up to retrieve rods and reels since I was a guide on Toledo Bend back in '69 and used it all over the world since...It works!!!
