I'm still new with the side imaging so don't get me lying but essentially it's like this. the centerline on the screen is the centerline of your transducer, The black you see to either side is the water column and the first bit of orange is the bottom contour. From there if you imagine it's a piece of paper and folded it out that would be the bottom picture. It's a very thin line not a cone image like a 2d transducer. But you can easily tell obviously left from right and then distance from the boat away. In the case above roughly 45 feet. What I do is if i'm trolling and see maybe a patch of reef or possible set of fish stacked up then i'll move the cursor and mark the spot then turn the boat and check it again. It really isn't something to actively hunt fish although, like above it gives you great vision to where some might be hanging out.
