I have never fish out of a kayak, except running catfish lines.

I would try keeping the butt end of the rod up against my body and hold the rod about a foot above the reel. This should give better control and allow enough leverage to pull in a big Red after letting it get tired out.

I would hold the net handle about a foot from the end and keep the end of the handle up against the forearm to increase leverage.

Also, I would allow him to practice this, catching many many big Redfish.
