Default Scope recommendations

Need a new scope for my model 700 5R MILSPEC .308
I had a Leupold VXIII 6.5-25x40 LR with a varmint hunter reticle. The reticle was not calibrated for a .308 so I sold it. Need suggestions for another scope under $1k preferably.

Nikon BDC. Not sure of the model you'd like, but they have quite a few under $1k and the spot on app covers a lot of the "dope" for the ones that don't auto adjust.

+1 on the Nikon. I have the M-308 and really like it. The magnification is up to you.

If you want the best bang for your buck, buy a Vortex. They have the best optics at the best price in the market. Burris would be the next choice. Or if you want to be one&done, save up and get a Nigthforce and call it a day. Scrap those BDC reticles, and get something with externally adjustable turrets and learn to shoot with MOA adjustments. Any of those BDC reticles are going to be calibrated for one round, and your gun may not even shoot that very round in accordance to the calibrated reticle.

Check out the Hawke rifle scopes and the associated software app from them.

Are you wanting a hunting grade scope or punching paper competitively scope?

I hope your 5R MILSPEC shoots better than mine did.

I would have kept the VXIII. We have two of them on longer range rigs. Who cares about the reticle cal, we adjust with the turrets. Adjustments depend on load and altitude. No cal really applies at 10,000 ft or for 155-190 grain bullets, but once we have the dope at 400, 600, and 1000, we can interpolate the adjustments at all points in between for a given bullet, muzzle velocity, and air density with the JBM ballistics program.

My daughter shoots F-Class and the occasional 600 yard benchrest. The VXIII scopes on her 6.5-284 and .300 WM are good enough for targets when zoomed up to 20X and also work well in the field for hunting. 40X would be better for F-Class, but then we'd have to swap scopes and re-zero and dope for hunting.

We may eventually buy a 40X scope if she sticks with the target work, but as long as hunting is a possibility for a given rifle, I lean toward the higher magnification Leupold VXIIIs.
