I just purchased the 35 whelen and wanted to know if any of you have hunted with this gun. Didn't know which one to get between the 45-70 ,444 or the 35 , hope I made the right decision. Any info would be appreciated.

thats the gun I wanted but they were not allowed till a few months after I bought my 45-70but from everything I have read about that caliber, it should shoot flatter and faster then the 45-40 and I think its pretty close to a 30-06

Reason I got the 35 is because I was told it could shoot up to 200 yards but bullets not cheap , brought a box of 250 gr. bullets and it was like $48. Going mount a scope on it and see what she got. Also I paid $258 for the gun at academy.

You will be right around 30/06 power levels and even past that with certain loads. Remington did and may still have it with a 200grn bullet at 2675fps. Looks like it would be a great gun to hanload for. Looking in my maanual you could load a 180grn bullet in the 2750/2800fps range up to a 250grn bullet in 2300fps range. Hope that gives you some insight man. J

Thanks for the info,I might drop down from a 250 gr. to a 180 r 200 gr.

It will be a lil easier on the shoulder with a 180 or 200grn bullet.

Should of asked questions first, they said here are the bullets (250 gr) and I said ok, I think I will go with the 200gr but I'll need to get some to sight it in. So now I'm stuck with a $48 box of 250gr which I'm pretty sure there is no return for them.

Have you shot the H&R 45-70? if so how does the 35 kick comparatively?

I have never shot a 35 whelen. Forgive me if my first post was misleading. It was not my intention at all. I just compared the 30/06 data to the 35 whelen data from my reloading manual. Was just trying to give a power comparison. The 35 whelen is nothing more than a 30/06 case necked up to fit a .35 caliber bullet so recoil between the two should be about the same given that the same weight bullet is used. Again this is all info from my reloading manuals. Sorry if there was any confusion caused by me. J

Be careful about using 180 and 200 grain bullets in the 35 Whelen. The Whelen will push those bullets fast and the bullets may not hold up well as those are light bullets for the caliber. If you shoot Barnes bullets it will not matter as they are going to retain a hundred percent weight retention regardless of the weight of the bullet.

The problem with bullets that are light for caliber is that they tend not to exit an animal. They will no doubt kill the crap out of game, but if the animal runs off in a swamp or real thick area you may not have a bloodtrail to follow because you may not have an exit wound.

Just something to consider.

I had brought a box of the Barnes 180gr triple shock ballistic tips thinking my son r daughter would be able to shoot it but I don't think so cause it still kicks like a mule.

Yeah, that 35 is going to kick pretty hard no matter what bullet you purchase.

U picked the best caliber. And it's easily a 300 yard rifle. Try the 200 grain hornady superformance. Dead on at 200 only drops 9 inches at 300. Oh and it kicks hard.

Before the .375 H&H was avail. in a rifle that regular guys could afford,( m70 Win. ) the .35 Whelen was THE big caliber for BIG/DANGEROUS game.Learn to handload and the cost will be down around .30/30s off the shelf.With sharp bullets and full power loads,it is a honest 400 yard rifle....if you are a 400 yard capable shooter that is... and much more powerful than the '06 GOOD LUCK !!!
