yup you get them pretty cheap back then I think those were made in Japan and cost around $39 to $49 dollars nice reel that had same feel as an Old Lews but lighter.
Like the old Black Shimano Bantamn with flipping switch you could buy all day long for $49 or Abu 5000 series red fishing reels really made in Sweeden not Korea or China. Love the pistol grip rod you zing spinnerbait under some trees easily. or How about buying a real Lew's Childre speed spool or Shimano Bantam for $99 made in Japan which was alot of money for a reel back then. I also had a bottom line side finder that you put a transducer on bottom and side of trollmotor to find fish below or to the side of you $299. Eagle made a cheaper version for $149 back then. My first boat was a brand new state of the art aluminum riveted Fisher Marine Marsh Hawk with new 40 hp 3 cylinder Mariner Outboard loaded for $5995 plus tax. For $20 I could fill my Nissan truck and boat up with real gas not ethanol. Drive it from Baton Rouge to Golden Meadow pay a launch fee and have $2 left over. $5 more you had enough for live shrimp or cocohoe minnows. Those were the days! My dad bought an old Ranger from an old couple in toledo bend. They were camp neighbors. The old man fell ill and never made it back to God's Country. But as he was home in bed sick he gave my dad permission to go in his camp and take some momentos. I didn't get to go in the camp but dad said the old man had a tackle buying problem! Dad said there was old pistol grip rods still in the plastic bags 12-15 in each corner of the camp. Never had reels on them! Lew's, Abu Garcia, Shimano, you name it he had it! Chest of Drawers full of reels still in the boxes. This isn't counting the rigs already spooled up and used by the old man and his wife. Dad wasn't greedy. He took 3-4 rod and reels that he knew the old man used. He left the rest to the family. Not long after that the old man passed. That was about 5 years ago that he passed. And last month his wife passed. The family since then has cleaned out the camp of all the fishing tackle. IDK what they did with it all but I hope they realized what they had.

Different time back then.
I can remember the spillway was king you have to wait in line for 30 minutes to launch a boat when river was going down. Remember when everyone poured their own worms before they go fishing. After you fished you put worms back in bag and melt them to pour again before next trip. Pistol grip rods were the king. I even got a Zebco 33 with ivory ball on back which you put pressure on it for your drag. For OLD RIVER GUYS Do you remember there was guy called Disco Donny he was an African American guy in a wheel hair that would block the road at Old River Landing? You would have to give him a beer to pass. Those were the days! |

This is one of my first baitcaster setups, early 80's... Good for a conversation piece in the workshop, especially with the younger guys...

My Father-In-Law use to Bass Fish a lot. He gave me some old team Daiwa Reels. They still cast pretty but I need to get them cleaned up. They all from the mid 80's.
I remember going fishing with my Dad and my Grandpa. My PawPaw was one of the first ones I ever seen with an open face reel it was an Abu Garcia Cardinals. Those back then were pretty decent. He only had one though because to him they didn't work as good as his Zebco 808's. We would fish trout with 20lb test, tandem rigged shad rig tipped with shrimp and catch a few #3 tubs of 11-13" trout at different dams all around CoCodrie and Lake Boudreaux. |
