Default Duck Fight

Was sitting on the porch with the camera and saw two black-bellied whistling ducks land on a wood duck box, so walked over to snap a few pics (This box was also being used by some woodies). By the time I got to the box, one of the squealers went inside the box. I took a couple pics and then heard a woodie coming in, and snapped a pic of the hen woodie as she landed near the box. The hen woodie then confronted the sqealer on top the box, and then she flew inside the box and commenced to kicking some A$$! For about 5 seconds there was a squirmish inside the box, then the squealer comes stumbling out with the hen pecking at him. Caught a few pics as all this was going on.

Great timing to get the pictures.

Any idea of what is inside the box..... eggs or babies?

If she was defending the box it almost had to be eggs. Wood duck chicks will jump out of the box within 24-36 hours of hatching. Whistlers are primarily seed eaters so they probably weren't trying to eat any eggs or chicks. Whistlers will nest in a box so they were probably looking for a nest box for their own brood.

Question: the final picture shows the squealers both back on top of the box. Did the one that got the bum's rush circle back around and take it's place back on the box? Or was that one of the first pics?

Pretty sure she has eggs in there but not sure if they will hatch. Several other woodies on the bayou already have ducklings out the nest
