Default Dink friday 8-5-16

After a late start dad and I went after them again today. The first spot we fished in turners on 8-3 had a boat on it so we went to the 2nd spot we went on 8-3 near washout and it had three boats on it. So we did what I didn't do on 8-3 and that was fish birds working out in middle of lake. Lots and lots of Dink's. Fish and bait blowing up everywhere! Didn't need birds to show where fish were but after an hour or more of no keepers we made short run for cut near washout again cause I could see those three boats were gone. More Dinks but finally put a couple in the box until I set the hook on a nice one and it came straight to the top and made huge swirl like the bigger ones usually do and before I could get I got a nice trout on out of my mouth a big shark jumped all the way out the water landing on its side and I never felt anything after that and reeled in only string. I asked dad did u see that and he said yep u got robbed. We fished it for an hour after that taking break for snacks but never got another good bite. We even put a 4-5" croaker on and a little bigger mullet I had in back livewell in case we found the big trout again to try to get the shark to play but nothing. It was full on trout I guess lol. Went back to turners and put 3 reds and a couple more trout in box before calling it a day and running out of bait. Total 5 trout and 3 reds. Huge difference from just two days earlier. Lots of boats running around all morning so it could of been tough for others as well. It was my fewest amount of keepers for over a month or more. That was the 3rd shark I hooked this year. Well I never felt today's! One of the others was in same spot but got it to side of boat and was just a little bull shark. The other one I hooked in south entrance to west cove and it made 2-3 huge jumps before breaking off. That one and today's was four feet or more. Idk sharks so couldn't say wat kind. Fished big lake for years and have never hooked a shark till this year and at #3 already and with the water being just like gulf water may hook more. My next trip will be from Turners Bay north though so not as likely. Water is so clear and salty now my fishing spots I used to fish in moss lake and prein lake all the way up to Salt water barrier have to be holding trout by now.

Thanks for taking the time for the write up. I was out there Wed afternoon and caught plenty of trout between washouts and long point with the same results. Lots of short fish. I was out there from 5-9 pm. Made quiet a few adjustments from lil johns to top water and no luck on increasing the size. I threw strictly artificial and only boxed one 24" trout, one 28" red, and a 18" red. The whole time I was wondering what might have been with a mullet or croaker being this time of the year. South winds I think may have kept the out going tide running a little late as the water wasn't moving like I was hoping it would have been at that time.

I have only been fishing big lake for a couple of years. I am becoming a fresh water to inshore cross over guy ... But for now Wed evening I ran into what I would consider two different magnum size schools of trout pushing shrimp to the surface. No birds over them and just me and the fish with no electronic pings in the water (shut electronics off) and minimal troll motor taps to steer only as I was up wind of them. I was trying to be stealth as possible. I was able to work them for a bit before they stopped/moved . It was kinda fast action with little johns to land 3-4 short trout then a occasional lady fish hit then back to short trout. So I tried to fish behind or to the side of the school a bit in hopes of a bigger bite but didn't work. Either no bite or same size trout. Drove me nuts to have so many fish around me with no keepers !

I do wonder if the electronics being on makes a difference.

I don't really know for sure ... But I do the same while bass fishing. Especially in shallow water or at night. I try not to let compartment doors slam, run TM more than need be, make sure when getting down from front deck not to thump down on floor, drop pliers, Ect Ect ....

I'd imagine in the ship channel say around 210/10 or right around the ferry crossing in Cameron it may not matter as much as in the lake. Those places seem to have constant motors running and banging going on.

Or I'm just too OCD

I agree with W. Too many small fish. Even if there was a 20" fish mixed in its not gonna hit before those Dinks do. There were so many fish it looked like acres and acres of blowups. But.. I have been out there jumping from school to school and found a school of 13-14" trout recently so I'm not saying its not worth trying. Myself I've had my fill of dink fish this year and would rather spend my time away from em. I'm hoping its not like this in the fall. Anyone know? I've been away for years and there has always been a time in early summer where I run into Dinks and lady fish but never fall fishing. I'm hoping this fall the dinks go somewhere else but I don't see how with this many out there. Can't be enough food to sustain them all year. Idk . I'm just guessing but it's ridiculous!

My cousin from Deatonville said the rod and reel anglers have no influence on the population but he is a couyon

You all should be glad you have excuses like the weirs and the trout limit to blame when you have slow days. Us vermilion bay anglers have nothing to point the finger at

The dinks in summer won't be dinks in the fall/winter.
