Default Built a pirogue today

My good friend has been asking me to help him build a pirogue. I told him I'd do all the wood work and he could take it to do the fiberglass. He came over and here are some pics of what we got done in about 3-4 hrs.

The dimensions are 14' long, 26" width at bottom, 35" width at top, 11" tall sides. He wanted it to be stable because he is a larger frame guy.

Thank you.... My friend went cheap on material and bought 3/8" plywood sheathing. I built one out of 1/4" and it works great but my friend is a bigger guy and wanted it to be more sturdy. Sheathing was only $13 a sheet but has many voids throughout the wood. He will be fiberglassing over all the seams and along the outside walls so I think it will be fine.

I attached a copy of the plans.... They are free to distribute in the metric measurements. I just found a converter from mm to inches online and switched it all over. The plans are good guidelines but the only thing I really used these plans for were to get the measurements when cutting out the 2 pieces of plywood. After that, its pretty much just a matter of putting everything together with the right spacing.

This is the third pirogue I've built but one thing I learned after building the first one is to have all gaps come together as good as possible. On the 2nd and 3rd one I did, I used liquid nail between the bottom and sides. After that dried, the boats would float but I put fiberglass cloth and resin along the bottom and up the sides.

They really are fairly easy to build and come in handy when you need them.

Stine lumber does sell a kit to make a boat. It comes with the plans. keel and ribs. They are made from cypress. I paid 25 bucks for the kit. You just make the boat the size you want. Think it was called uncle john's boat kit.

Good eye fool. It sure is.... I've been working on it for the past couple of weeks. Gonna be much larger than most hybrids @ 11ft long, 48" bottom, and 60" at its widest point. Here's a couple of pics. Might get to test it this weekend.

This is a pic of what it should look like when complete. FYI, I did not build this finished boat.

Thanks guys. I can't wait to finish it and test it out. I put the nose on today and all I have left is to put on the sides and fiberglass the top and bottom. Have y'all seen any hybrids or small layout boats around SWLA or know if anyone uses them around here?
