I have several great ones but hard to say which is best. They all have a certain job during the cleaning process. Ones skill level is equally or more important than the name brand on his knife. |

Get a Case. I was given one about 10 years ago as a Christmas gift and it has been by far the best skinnig knife I have ever had. It holds and edge better than any other knife I have.

go to smith and son's in sulphur and get you a handmade knife and be done with it. i just got one for christmas and love it. you also get free sharpening for life when you buy one.

More important than the knife is that the user knows how to set and maintain a proper edge on a knife. And an edge that shaves hair off your arm is only good to impress your buddies.

Hunting knives
By far if you have a local maker I would go with him, there is a guy in Port Allen I work with that does awesome work- Vines knives. But off the self higher end favorite is Bench Made. Have used this knife for its 11th year, it's seen a lot!

Just want a kick a-- knife that holds a edge and can skin a deer with out having to sharpen in he middle of the process.

I have a high end buck knife holds edge forever but I have to send it off to get it sharpened. The steel is very hard. Scared to run it through the work sharp because I havnt figured out how to not roll the tip yet.

I got the outdoor edge set for Christmas, comes with a skinning knife with guy hook, boning knife, and a sharpener all in a convenient carrying case. Cleaned two deer with it last year, two this year and a pig and still haven't sharpened em.

I've probably skinned and butchered at least 100 deer with a Buck Classic Special 119 6" long fixed blade knife. Once I learned to skin deer quickly, the knife didn't matter much.
I'd usually start by sharpening both of my (identical) knives. If I was only skinning and doing the primary cuts on one deer, I'd get through it with the first knife. If I was skinning and doing the primary cuts on multiple deer, I'd usually end up using both knives. I wouldn't say that this knife was the absolute best for the job, but I never longed for anything different. I think the key is a sharp knife with a handle that you are comfortable with and knowing how a deer is put together and how to use a knife deftly to take them apart. More recently, I use the knife to make the first cut when filleting bull redfish, that is separating the fillet from the backbone and ribs. I then use a fillet knife to separate the fillet from the skin. |
