I belive the rev limiter is to keep you from blowing the engine to pieces. Probably has nothing to do with Mercs warranty as to recommended RPMs. Just my .02.

But it would be easy to have the prop blow out with the jack plate or trim too high, then warranty void???

I have a Yamaha 150 4 stroke.
I had to run her at different rpm's for 5 minutes each, for the first 10 hours. I made 2 different 5 hour trips to get it out of the way before fishing. I didn't want to have to worry about that while fishing.
According to the manual and the dealer, I had to run her at WFO for 5 minutes intervals.
I ran for 500, 1000, 1500, 2500, 3000, 3500, 4000, 4500, 5000, 5500 and 6000 for 5 minutes at a time. I would ramp her up 500 at a time, then ramp her down 500 at a time. The dealer checked on how long I ran at each RPM in the computer. He did gripe cause I only ran her at 6000 for like 2 minutes in stead of longer. I felt it was not good to run her that hard, new.
I could not run her at 2000 rmps. The boat was plowing and it felt like she was straining way too hard. Again, I didn't want to screw up my new motor too early.
After the 10 hr. break in, the dealer said I could run her how ever I wanted. It was under warranty. I didn't do anything to void it.
He gave me a print out of what they got out of the ECM too.

W get off your high horse, your boat handling skills dont match your claim I had to stop the boat twice pulling up to the dock instead of you bumping her into reverse.
its over a certian percentage of run time over 5750. say if you have 5 hours of run time at 6000 then they wont warranty a burnt power head.

Hey "W" will he put a real motor on those things, like a Yammy or Suzuki? I went and looked at the Frontier and wasn't too impressed. If I pull the trigger it will be on a Haynie...

Default very wrong

Your rev limiter is set @ 6200 and if you run that motor and hit the limiter they will not void your warranty.you know how many times merc wants the print out zero and thats coming from the bigest merc dealer in texas the rev limiter is to warn you and let you know your prop is worn are you have a prop issue that boat will top out right @5700 and thats perfect i can see why you dont work on motors anymore.tunnel boats hit there rev limiter 90 % of the time get the boat on plane.

Now when you say, that about tunnel boats...

Kinda like when the prop doesn't catch? And it basically Revs up big time?
