Default Got the garden going

My little helpers and I cleared out the leftovers from the winter garden and got the spring garden going. This is the 3rd year buying my plants from the Jockey Lot. I've been really happy with the plants and they are way cheaper than buying from a nursery or box store.

Last year my cucumbers outgrew the little trellis I had and overtook half of the garden. I scrounged up some scrap 2x12's and a drop piece of cattle panel at my brother's house and made a nice little 4'x4' for my cucumbers and strawberries. I also made a 2'x10' box with 40' of fence in the front yard for some mirlitons. I really hope those take off.

Nothing better than getting in the garden with the little ones. Good memories there.

Yes indeed. That's the neighbors field, but I have my own stalls that I get fertilizer out of.

I think their official name is chayote. I've always heard them called mirlitons or vegetable pears. It is a member of he gourd family just like melons, squash, and cucumbers. We've always pickled them or made chow chow with them. It makes a great garnish for gumbos or any gravy. They are also really good saut?ed. My grandpa used to grow them and pickle them. I haven't had any good homemade in a while so I sprouted a few and planted them. Hopefully they do well and I can start pickling my own.

Here's a stock photo off of google.

My grandma used to pickle them . Every time I tried they rotted . My father n law used to have 5 racks . He'd pick around 80 dozen every other day in the fall to sell on side the road . They like a lot of water .
