I didn't know this was illegal. Holbrook's seafood market on 171 going in to Moss Bluff always sold snapping turtle meat and live snappers. As of about 10 years ago this was going on, evidently things have changed???

There is a common snapper and an alligator snapper. Louisiana is the only state where u can be in possession of an alligator snapper and u cannot sell them legally.

I got pictures [on my other computer] of a really big alligator snapper that was caught this past spring on a fishing rod while the man was fishing from the bank.

He told me that it took him over an hour to pull in in.

Evidently the alligator snapper has the ridges on its back. I've heard both terms before but I would call either one of these just a snapping turtle. Learn something new every day

Common snapping turtle (left) and alligator snapping turtle (right)

You can't sell them, that is what I was told when I caught one and asked. I usually catch more of the snapping versus an alligator, they taste the same to me. My wife caught one a while back and threw it in the van, talk about fun when I opened the back door....lol. I was impressed, she caught it by the tail and threw it in the back like it wasn't nothing the kids said.
