Default Bread n Butter pickle time

Was going to shoot sporting clay match but raining this morning. Wife and i made 9 qts of BnB pickles with onion and a little garlic. I have the light green burpless cucumbers and i am getting a lot of bitter ones. I have picked them small, medium and large. I am going to try something different next year.

As much as I love B&B pickles...I think I like the onions even more.

Default bread n butter pickle time

.Bread & Butter Pickles

2 lbs cucumbers, cut into slices
2 small (or 1 large) sweet onion, sliced(vidailia)
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 1/2 - 3 cups sugar (to taste)
2 1/2 cups white vinegar
4 - 6 pint jars with lids and rings
1/8 tsp Ball Pickle Crisp per jar

Pickling Spice Mix
1/2 tsp. ground turmeric
1 tsp. celery seed
1 tsp. mustard seed
3/4 tsp whole allspice (I had to use ground)
2 tsp. minced onions
1 tsp salt
1/8-1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 tsp. pickle spice

Add hot water to jars to temper. Place lids in small pan with simmering water.

Mix sugar, vinegar, spice mix and salt in large pan. Add Pickle Crisp to liquid. Bring to boil, stirring to dissolve sugar and salt. Simmer about 5 minutes.

Add cucumber, onions, and garlic to liquid. Heat on high; remove from heat when liquid starts to boil.

Pour hot water out of jars. Add cucumbers, onions and garlic to jars with slotted spoon. Pour liquid over pickles until jars are filled. Wipe any liquid or spices from jar opening with wet cloth, so lids will seal. Add lids and screw rings on tightly. Listen for each lid to pop!
I don't keep past 6 months or it is all gone in 6 months. Give some away and eat all i can. I gave my sister-in-law a quart of these and 2 hrs later i get a text and there is 2 pcs of pickle left. I made her a 1/2 gallon jar this time. lol

I was just about to do a search on pickling. I cant keep up with my pepper plants. I need to start pickling them. I also planted some calypso cucumbers this year that I'd like to try to pickle. You pickle the bitter cucumbers? My burpless and thunder are getting a few bitter ones now.

Where did you get those green knight cucumbers from Bubba?

Default bread n butter pickles

I buy some at HEB, Market Basket and Walmart. Order off of amazon also. The pickle crisp came from Walmart in Orange.
From a different easy recipe i use the BnB pickle mix ordered off amazon. I went to about 12 stores trying to find the pickle mix and nobody caries it.
