Default Kayak trolling

Do you use a second rod and troll behind your kayak while fishing with your other rod? What lures do you find best to use?

Best,
Tom

I don't own a yak but I do know the trolling methods works via regular boat, actually quite successfully, normally works best in 6'-10' of water along the channel where fish are known to congregate. In 6'-10' of water, you keep the bait off the bottom. I would think, although not a 100% for sure, being I don't own a yak, that you will have more success trolling with both rods out the back. IMO, if you try casting with one and trolling with the other, you will not always be going fast to enough to keep the trolling rod's bait off the bottom while casting the other rod. When you are trolling and make frequent stops, your bait tends to hit the bottom and you are more prone to get hung up. Remember when trolling, it's important to keep the bait off the bottom. As for as baits, really anything plastic you would normally throw, ie, sparkle Beatle, swim baits, etc. my favs are the Beatle and the power swim baits. Hope this helps and good luck!

If trolling motor is used be sure kayak is registered and legal. Must have numbers, running lights and throw cushion if motor is mounted.

No trolling motor here. I was interested in trolling behind kayak when paddling to / from destination and wondering what bait(s) might be good to use.

Best,
Tom

I troll with one rod mounted on a Scotty mount in the front of me, with the rod pointed out towards the side. I want to see when I have a strike or get hung up. I always use soft plastic swim baits with paddle tails. It works.

If you can paddle at a consistant speed I just let out line till im bumping then reel in till I stop. Avocado cocahoe with a red head is my favorite.

Thanks for your replies and your recommendations are much appreciated.

When trailing your kayak with a soft plastic lure what weight lead head do you feel would be best? ( 1/8 oz, 1/4 oz, ...) ???

Best,
Tom

1/8 usually, 1/4 if you want to try deeper water.

I troll frequently in my yak. Never pass up on an opportunity to drag a bait when you are going from one area to the next. 1/8 jig heads work best for me unless the water is 8-10 feet, then I'll go heavier.

I would think a rattle trap type bait or a chatter bait would work
