Headknocker The Rut

I know its the rut and all, but does anyone else sit in the stand and wonder about all the other things one could be doing?

I didn't think the rut kicked in anywhere in LA until at least early to mid November.

We used to make a hunt at bent creek lodge in Alabama every year and the rut there wasn't until January also. Where I hunt in Oklahoma, the rut is usually mid to late November.

Peak rut in 3 and 8 is always after the full moon in October. Usually mid to late October.

No, never.

But I've often been doing other things and wondered if I could be deer hunting or fishing.

Sitting in the deer stand (and fishing) are some of my favorite things. Other than thinking about the task at hand, I often wonder, "How can I do this more?"

In general runs late around large river systems (bottomlands). Earlier in piney woods and very early in coastal areas. The rut in Louisiana can be as early as October and run into February in places in Louisiana

Some variations of that here in some zones and some of that can be attributed to deer stockings from the past and where they came from

There can also be three ruts in the same area (~28 days apart) so areas with late ruts already can sometimes see rutting activity into March usually the second rut is does that didn't get bred the first go around and the third can be this years fawn that are going into estrus for their first time

yep, rut in Vermilion parish is underway. My son hunted Sunday and heard a thunderous fight in the palmettos, but could not see a thing. I think it is delayed a little this year with the heat and late harvest moon (full moon mid October), but it's on.
LDWF website has a chart that shows breeding dates throughout the state. it is a complicated chart with all the historical deer transplants etc, but the earliest breeding starts in late September in Vermilion parish.
The 2016 Winter Wildlife Insider from LDWF had a great article on deer restocking in Louisiana, every deer hunter in the state should read up on it.
