Where is the duck pond located?
I gator hunted in the impoundment for 6 years. Is it the old School Board section? |

I found it. It is outside the impoundment, East of Lacassine Bayou.
There is a lot of trees in that area in some places. I haven't hunted gators in there, but I fished in that area before. Last edited by Ray; 11-26-2010 at 01:17 AM. |

Page 13 You drive to the end of the Lowery road. There is a parking lot there for fishing the river. |

They killed 3 teal and a spoonie. I went with him to scout it before the season. There are no blinds, no decoys, just a post with a number on it. He also got picked to hunt Cameron Prairie, I was able to go with him on that hunt. Nice pit blinds with decoys and you can walk to the blind. Lots of geese flying but no ducks came in. |

Do you have blind #1 or blind #2? Blind #1 is on the north shoreline and would be good with a north wind. Not so good on a south wind. It can be hunted out of the grass. Blind #2 has to be hunted out of a boat blind. There are several small islands, 6' to 20' in diameter at the blind #2 spot, you are supposed to stay within 50' of the #2 blind post. They are covered in cut cane. If you try to get on the islands you will get cuts on your hands, face, and arms, the canes are like razors. The canes are 9' tall so you can't see over them. We anchored the boat on the downwind side of an island, threw out decoys and covered us and the boat in camo. There were very few birds flying low on a blue bird morning. There were flocks of mexican squealers in the area from all of the trees. If you haven't been there before it can be hard to find the main canal off the river in the dark, take a big Q beam. Go in daylight before your hunt and take a GPS to mark the entrance. Once in the canal it is an easy trip to the duck pond. You launch at Gary's landing and pay $3 when you pick up your boat. Opening day there were 50-75 trucks trying to find parking spaces. The river/lake can get pretty rough if there is a strong north or south wind, imagine Turner's Bay on a south wind. Good luck.

Do you happen to know how long it will take to make the trip from gary's to the pond with a 20 Hp motor? and are you limited to smaller than 25 Hp?

Coming off the river, there are several turns in the various canals. If you are not familiar with the area, go during the day to learn how to get to where you are hunting. |

It is about 5-6 miles from Gary's landing to the duck pond, so no more than 20 minutes IF you find the canal on the first try. The canal runs east-west. There are a couple of cross canals, do not take. A mile or so in there is a 45 degree turn to the NW and a couple of hundred yards later another 45 degree turn to the north. Another mile there is a small tank battery on the left, keep going north. There is a tree with branches sticking up laying in the middle of the canal about 1/2 mile north of the tank battery. Go on either side of it. There is a canal to the left, do not take. Bear to the left side of the canal and there is a canal to the left with a sign saying Lacassine Duck pond restricted area, permit hunting only. Turn left at the sign. You can run down the canal keeping 20-30 yds north of the south tree line. With your Q beam you will see the sign to the #1 blind, keep going straight and you will see the sign for blind #2 about 1/4 mile west. Using a trolling motor or push pole turn north into the pond and go about 100 yds to the post for blind #2. If you miss the turn to the duck pond the canal dead ends, turn around and idle back. The canals are deep enough to run in. If you are looking for the anal entrance the water gets shallow along the edge of the river. The canal entrance is not marked and there are some trees the partially block seeing it. It is difficult to see at night if you haven't been a couple of times, particularly at night. Gerald is correct in making a trip to the landing and finding the canal in the day time before trying to find it at night. Go to Google Earth or Google map and you can see the canals really well. Off of Google Earth you can get the Lat/Lon of the entrance and enter into a GPS. That should get you close but not exact.

Duck pond hunts
I had a hunt there last year. There are no blinds. Only tall grass. If you have a true north wind you will prolly kill. If you get a east or west wind then you are screwed if you drew the bank blind. The best blind is the west end island blind. We saw alot of birds but we had a strong west northwest wind. The water was deep at the time. Prolly isn't now! Good luck!
