Default Turkey hunting.....Opening morning

Who is ready and going in the morning?

I think I have everything packed and loaded for tomorrow mornings lottery hunt at Clear Creek WMA.

Now if I can just have some luck finding a bird. I have been scouting 5 times and only located 3 birds. Then 2 of these birds were not there when I checked for them on other scouting trips.

The one bird has been gobbling on several scouting outings and is fairly close to the road. I suppect there will several hunters going after that bird.....so I will go to a different spot.

The weather should be good at first light.....but down hill by late mornting. Thunder storms and high winds will be coming in before the cold front moves through in the afternoon.

The weather for a Sunday hunt...if needed....will be 20 deg cooler and 15 to 20 mph winds. Not good for Turkey hunting because you can not hear a Tom gobble and the Tom can not hear you calling from very far away.

I went to Sherburne a few days ago. I scouted several areas that have almost always had some Tom gobbling this time of the year, but I did not hear any gobbles. I may hunt there Thur or Friday.

Briars.....yep....way more now than ever before. Next will come way more underbrush....all thanks to hurricane Gustav taking out so many trees.

The water is still high...but dropping.

Today's hunt went about like most of my scouting this year.

We did not hear any gobbling all day.

Luck was not with us today. ~ 9 AM we were in an area that we had heard a Tom gobble 2 weeks ago. We were going to go "just a little" farther to setup.....then a Turkey took off flying from right were we were headed.

Almost the same thing happened ~2 PM.

~ 10 AM.....after calling for 20 minutes, a big hen flew into where we are setup and comes in fairy close before quickly heading away. I think she was trying to tell us that this was "her" area and we should not be there.....she was vocal after landing. We were hoping a Tom would be following her.....but no luck.

The rain held off until almost 2 PM. Then it rained most of the time until we left at 4:30 PM. From Noon till 1:30 the wind blew 10+ mph then it got almost calm again.

We only heard shots fired 2 time today.....so I don't think very many Turkey were kill there today.

I have my hunting vest hanging to dry out and took the shotgun apart to clean/dry it so it will be ready the for the hunt in the morning. I sure hope the wind is not too bad because it is going to be in the mid 30"s in the morning.

hopefully ill get to make a hunt soon, been real busy with the house and work and everything else that life is dishing out, dad said they haven't heard any turkeys though lately. They think its because there has been some pet dogs hanging around but who knows
