I just bought k2's new summit model. Its a different deal holds ice twice as good as the previous models. Looks like they've made the improvements to hold ice although I am of the opinion that you buy a k2 for its toughness not necessarily that it'll hold ice better.

Rouses has the 70 qt for like $299.00. Igloo right next to it for $39.00. The rack was full of K2's and the igloo section was almost depleted.

Update - the day after this thread started, I cryogenically pre cooled my coleman extreme to -76F (any cooler would have made the structure brittle and risked failure) then put some inside out frozen slo melt ice in. I filled it to the top and haven't opened it since, I am happy with the results (1 cube left after a month, not bad). The only problem is I have a rope handle on one side and busted hinges.

That's whats up Gooh!
Here's a hinge "FIX" Get a 2" flat nylon strap like the truckers use to secure their loads. Cut it 2" long with an old butterknife that you heated up that way it melts as you cutting it. Use that for a "Hinge". It will outlast your ice chest. |

The hinges on this 94 qt. Colman squeeked really loud. I tried oil and grease on the plastic hinges.....did not help the noise. So I took of the brand new hinges and replaced with these straps. That was over 2 years ago and still look good. |

An old piece of leather cut into short pieces work nicely as a hinge too.

Another point to consider is pre-cooling the beverages. A few dozen sodas or beer will melt a lot more ice cooling down from 90 deg F or 70 deg F than if you pre-cooled it in a fridge to 40 deg F. Warm soda melts a lot more ice than the same mass of warm ice chest (water has a much higher heat capacity than common cooler materials). |
