Is there any visual aids around the old jetties that is a sign you are getting close? I almost crossed into there this past weekend but I didn't research it.

Some of the rocks are visible, but if the tide is really high many of them will be submerged. The red line in the attached pic marks the location of the old jetty. On the bottom left is the old river channel that's going out to the ship channel on the south end of the lake. If you come into the lake from the ship channel via the old river channel, you can pick up the west end of the old jetty there and see how it runs.

The shallow spot that W talked about in the north entrance to West Cove is just that. Shallow! If you go flying in there, and the tide is really low, you can find yourself 100 yds into the cove sitting on bottom. Late fall and winter time, low tide, north wind blowing 15 to 20 is a sure bet you will get stuck there. Always feel your way in if you think the tide may be too low. If you start kicking up mud get out. |

Thanks for the info, I almost went into big lake through the old channel. I had a bad feeling because I hear mention before of jetties/reefs on the lake. Now if we could point fish out that easy....lol

Thanks for asking this question. Other than the north entrance into West Cove are there any other places in West Cove that someone should pay special attention?

Avoid the south side on long point, the north bank of west cove, the east bank of the lake, in addition to what has been written already

Welcome to the Salty Cajun web site. Yes, the above area will be very shallow if you get 100 to 150 yards from the bank. I have seen Red's chasing bait along the bank and could not get close enough to cast to them along the north bank of west cove. |
