Default Brick BBQ project

I'm thinking about building a small brick BBQ pit, and looking for some advice. I want to place it on a small slab of concrete(about 30"X36"). My question is, how thick should the slab be, and is there a specific type of concrete I should use for high heat? Or is it best to use rebar? Maybe it's a bad idea to build a fire directly on concrete-dunno. Fire bricks are probably the way to go, but I'm trying to cut expenses. Also would normal mortar be OK for the bricklaying? Any suggestions are appreciated.
