This is a commercial nursery. They get the baby oysters from the LSU hatchery (at the LDWF Marine Lab) and grow them here at the nursery to a size where they won't fall out of mesh sacks. The baby oysters are then either transferred to mesh sacks in grow-out cages or are "planted" on oyster bottoms for grow-out.

Oyster grounds out East are all private seed grounds that are leased. They have to reseed over there. Wish they would over here!!! But big lake is public, so no forced reseeding.

Guys. That's the oyster hatchery/farm I work at. ANYTIME you want to see it this summer we will tell you how every last bit of it works. I'm typically there tues, wed, and thurs every week. Wish I woulda known folks from here were coming. If you can't make it tues - thurs shoot me a pm and I'll see what I can do about a tour on any other day. We usually have a tour about every other day this summer.
