Default Questions about Lake Charles

I was looking to take my kayak out on Lake Charles how is the trout and redfish there during the summer months and if anyone wants to point me in a direction around where I should start? Thank you for any help.

There is a Kayak launch on the Golden Nugget side of the I-210 bridge.

Areas you can easily paddle from there:
Straight out from the launch on the edge of the channel (south side)
Across from the Casino along those rocks
Axiall Turnaround cut on both sides
Just west of the bridge and north of the channel there is a big flat

Good Luck!

The water in this area is very fresh and muddy right now due to all the rain in the last 2 months.

It will take 3+ weeks of NO RAIN to get some salt water in that area and the Speckled trout will start showing up in greater numbers.

Redfish are not as effected by low salinity water but the lack of normal "bait fish" will keep there numbers down some.

When the Salinity gets up to about 5 ppt [at the I-10 gauge reading] the trout will start to show in greater numbers.

Farther south in Big Lake the water is still very low in salinity and muddy. The very south part of the lake is effected more by the tides and the water is better.

Check this web site to see what the salinity levels are along the ship channel. Check off the "salinity" box and type in 120 under where it says "Days" then press enter to see a history of the gauge readings.

Put in south of Hackberry and fish west cove. The mouths of any of the bayous on that side produce a lot of fish for kayakers.

Also are there any good bank fishing locations on the lakes that have public access?

To not start another post, is there a place to launch in East Cove, would it be worth trying?
I've worked out of ole river north of the ferry and know the current is pretty nasty there. But could I go on around and slide my kayak in to reach some of those reef?
I'm good for 6+ mile travel in it.

You can put in at the old Crab Lady launch on the east side, paddle out the cut and stay along the bank, also a good reef to the north and to the south. Or Hebert's and go North.
