Default Public Basin Bird 3-28-2015

Last weekend I couldn't get it done in same area with a kid for youth hunt. I was disappointed as the kid worked hard and we worked an old bird from 8am until about noon.

This past week I made two before work scouting trips. On Wednesday had a bird gobble on roost from 6:30 until 7:15 when I left for work. Bird gobbled 5-15 times a minute during that entire time. Friday morning was in same area and didn't hear a peep.

Saturday morning I had a plan and some back up plans but stuck with my original plan and had a decoy out 25 yards in front of me. At daylight I only heard one bird and too far to get a good line on him. I was sitting in gobbler lounger waiting on him to sound off again when a bird gobbled 400 yards away from me. Immediately after another bird gobbled 100 yards from me. Hens in this area have been extremely quiet the last few weeks. I made one cluck, no tree yelps and beat my hat against tree and my legs for a fly down. A few minutes later another single cluck. A few minutes later he pitched down. That's about it, I had my bird and was picking up breakfast for the family and enjoying a great weekend. Will be back after them this week between work looking for number two.

That is classic! I'll take note and try to learn that combo call before midwest trip in May.
