Default My Little Winter Project

Have been working on my boat some during these winter months, most has been preventative maint stuff.... ie. pulled & rebuilt carb, cleanout, put on new gas lines (both inside the motor and outside (both newer ethanol resistant stuff))

But the original paint job on the boat was starting to look sort of shabby, And the only real complaint i ever had about this boat was that when that aluminum deck got wet it got real slippery.

After a load of internet research decided to follow procedure to use a product called Durabak to coat the insides of the boat, both for safety reasons and for looks.

the attached photos are the process from before to stripping / priming , 1st coat, and 2nd coat.

It was a pretty in depth project and took a good 6 - 7 hours of work time, but for approx 200$ out of pocket cost i think it turned out great. I followed exact recommended procedure from people that had used before and durabak instructions, I hope that i will therefore not have any issues with adhesion, but will update this post in a few months / year to let everyone know how it held up.

Looks great if you continue to have problems slipping. Look into hydro turf.

From my research i found out that what seemed to be the best method to ensure that there would be no seperation / slippage was as follows.

1) rough the painted surface up with 80 grit sandpaper, and rough up any bare aluminum with same

2) blow off dust, then wipe down all surfaces with Xylene

3) spray self etching primer on the bare aluminum spots.

4) after everything drys wipe down boat again with xylene, then start coating with durabak. Left it overnight for first coat to dry and then did second coat today.

People that have followed that procedure report no slippage / seperation... hope thats the case for me.

Do not spill any gasoline on it. The coating will come off.

Has that happened to you with the Durabak product or one of the other roll on bedliner products?

I am certainly going to be careful with the gas around it.

Yes
I used a similar product, different name but same app and final result. I made the mistake of placing my boat gas tank on the rear bench seat while refilling it. Dribbled small amount on the floor deck and immediately the surface started peeling up.
