Reds love shrimp dead of alive.

Hit the beach if that front rolls through Friday. I'm exactly as my name advertises, but when the north winds start up, even I can yank the bulls out at the beach. I've done some damage with cut mullet on a double drop leader. Lots of fun. Just wait a good 5-7 seconds once they start pulling. Then, it's on!

I still prefer cracked crab. After catching three bull reds on crab in 22 minutes yesterday, we managed three more on cut mullet over the next couple of hours. But we noticed that every crab was a solid hookup and a landed fish. We probably had more fish spit out the mullet as we had solid hook ups. My son thinks redfish just swallow and work their pharangeal teeth when they feel sharp points when eating crab, but start trying to spit out the mullet when they feel the hook.
We've caught a few bull reds on shrimp over the years, but most of the summer, catfish won't let shrimp stay in the water long enough for a bull red to find it. |

True on the shrimp. The catfish make it a frustrating battle. When you rig cracked crab do you just use a regular single drop leader? I find that mullet is a below average bait when I fish it that way. When I slap two chunks on, things seem to improve. Don't know. Maybe it's my limited experience.

Geek, y'all eat them catfish? I'm assuming you're referring to sailcats and not hardheads?

We eat the gafftops most of the time, and the hardheads rarely. Depends on the freezer situation. Plenty this year, so not keeping the hardheads.
