Default Sporting Clays - Etiquette and What to Expect

I've never been to a clay range (laugh it up), so what should I expect as a newbie walking up alone, or with the family, for the first time.

I've shot plenty of fowl, and plenty of skeet at the house, but am oblivious to the environment of a gun club.

One specific question I have is can I bring my 9 year old so he can hone his skills or is this frowned upon?

I don't have much experience but one of their biggest rules is to have your gun unloaded and breach open until you are in position to shoot.

Safety. Safety. Safety. People who frequent gun clubs are around guns a lot and see all kinds of unsafe acts. Leave the guns in the truck and take time to walk around. Speak to the range manager/owner. They will usually go out with you and show you what to do and what's expected.

It does not take much to get comfortable at a gun club. I shoot sporting clays a lot and most shooters are the nicest people to be around.

And make sure your guns are in proper working order before going.

Overall you will have a wonderful experience.

ask questions and don't take safety for granted......
Two shells only if you are shooting a pump of auto......
load only AFTER you have entered the station

Don't growd the shooters ahead of you, but you can look at the targets......
Shott in front of them

I took a lesson once and I asked for knowledge about choke selection. The instructor said, "Chokes mean inches...you guys are missing these targets in feet!" Just have fun.

Will do.

Thanks for the help! I'll probably be going to GOL in Maurice, or Wilderness in Lafayette later in the week.

Gotta be better than golf...

See Hawk at GOL. He is one of the nicest people in the business. He will take care of you and your crew. And 9 years old is not too young to start.

I just shot the lafayette oilmans clay shoot at GOL and they had signs everywhere that said no one under 18 allowed. That may have just been for the event, but I would ask before trying to walk up with my 9 year old.

That was just for the event. When they adult beverages, they have to post those signs.

I've shot at both. Wilderness is a lot cooler shooting situations. I wouldn't think a 9 year old would be frowned upon. Especially if you go during week, there usually isn't many people out there.

It's addictive and gets expensive quick. I use to shoot nsca shoots all the time. It's a lot of fun but doesn't have a whole lot of pay unless sponsors are involved and you are very good. Young guns are welcome on most shoots besides the oilfield ones. I think my little brother was 9 when he shot the US open held at Cajun elite. Hawk is one of the best around town and he knows his stuff. Corey Cruz is another one that is very good and gave private lessons. Like someone said above its a game of inches. I've seen guys that hold records in Argentina for doves but are not very good when they get on the sporting clay field. For a starter choke always go with cylinder or improved cylinder. The pros for the most part shoot modified. I always shot 7 1/2 size shot. You will be presented 2 targets at each station either a true pair or report pair. You are only allowed 2 shells in the gun at a time. Chamber must be open at all times when not in the station. Ear and eye protection will have to be worn for whoever is on the range. Each round is 100 targets so bring plenty of shells with a gun with little recoil. If you go out there with a 870 you will feel a sore shoulder the next day. Relax, have fun and its all in reading what the target is doing.

Default Kids

Kids are the future!! They are way more important than us. I'd say that of the kids are not welcome-- then I'm not welcome!!! I was in a fabulous hunting club with outstanding deer and turkey hunting. Had a very nice club house with very few members . They frowned on kids a lot so,, I got out. I got in that place for my kids!! I would never spend that kind of money on myself. Take a kid in the outdoors!!!

It's funny that I saw this. Just shot my first "real" skeet shoot today along with my son. He had never shot skeet before and I had only done the backyard with your buddy thing. It was a fundraiser for the Kiwanis club. You can't hardly spend a more fun day with your son.
It was their first event and even though there were two certified referees there I saw a lot of what "I call" unsafe gun handling. Breeches were open but I saw plenty of muzzle sweeping. Breech open or not you control your muzzle. Do that in uspsa and you are disqualified instantly.
It is a fun sport and know my wife wants to try it
