Default Venice nearshore

I can not see how the people think around here. Many are saying "It ain't worth going for red snapper when the limit is only 2 fish." I hear this all the time. Last week we went out on a snapper trip. We got our 6 red snapper as expected. We also threw a few back but not many. We targeted mangrove snapper most of the day and we did a lot of catching. In the mix we also found 3 cobia for the box. We also caught and released 4 amberjack as they are out of season at this time. To add to the action we caught and released a baracuda, kingfish, blacktip shark, and jackcravele.

We had action all day and as you can see there was a lot of fish cleaning to be had. For people to be discusted with limited regulations shows that people are limited in their fishing knowledge. We had a great day on the water. I got fish slime on the camera lense. Opps!

A few days later I had a half day trip targeting trout. They had to be in early. We left the dock about 6:30 and went to an area that has been producing off and on. There were very few boats there and a sea plane with people wade fishing.

Got them into the action and action it was. As soon as I got there I knew it was one of the on days.

I attempted to get a few casts in but it was difficult. The trout were hitting the deck at a good pace and the box was filling up quickly.

The bite was hot on dead IQF shrimp at first but as the tide changed the bite changed to live shrimp. Yes the IQF shrimp out fished the live ones for about an hour. As the live shrimp bite picked up so did the size of the trout. We called it quits at 9:30. We came in with 66 trout in the box. If I had counted I may have stayed for the last 9 fish. We were on a tight schedule though and they had nothing to complain about after that "3 hour tour"

Life is Good!
Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It's more important than that.

nice catch and great report. Regarding you opinion about others and the 2 fish limit on ASR it is way more involved than that. It's about the federal Government managing a public resource to the detriment of the recreational fishermen. Again, Thanks for the report!!!!!

True, east side of state not so bad since snapper are close, for us on the west side it is at least 30 miles out before you catch decent snapper and much further for anything else. I sold my offshore boat years ago, hard to find friends willing to pay $4/gallon for couple snapper.

Nice fish, you wouldn't find me complaining either!

I'm going to Venice Thursday and Friday for work. Staying at cypress cove marina. Anyone have any suggestions on where to catch some blue cats? I've seen pics from the past where a coworker caught some monsters. It was right at the mouth of baptiste collette but each time we've gone we didn't have any luck there. Any suggestions on where to go?

In Venice if you run down river ( 25 miles from marina but protected run in Mississippi river) you can go 12 miles out n be in 300' of water, 18 miles out in 700+' . In eastbay u can be 5-10 miles out n be in 40'-100'

Lot of questions and remarks. I will try to get to all or most.

The Champ belongs to Ron. I run an Avenger for inshore fishing. For the nearshore and offshore I have a 26 glaicer bay catamaran. I get my individualy quick frozen shrimp (IQF) from Frelich's in Empire. Much better than fresh dead out of the bait tank. The red snapper farce is another story. 299? Made a stop there also. Was not as we left it the day before. Did not spend much time there. Currant was running like crazy. You should be able to get some blue cats right at the marina. This time of the year with the river so low the hard heads might be more than blues. Try the pass in front of the bait cleaning table. I got some nice bass at cypress cove right along the docks. The river or B.C. should be loaded with the blue cats. Distance out 8-20 miles from the pass. To the west it is a 8-15 mile run after red pass 8 mile run. Right out of south west pass the rigs are right in front of you. 12 miles from south pass 1000 feet of water. Mangrove secrets??? I fish for a living. I will say it is a lot of work and it takes more than one person with good stout spinning tackle. As you can see we got some big ones.

Hope I covered it all. Thanks for the comments.
