Need a new shotgun for my

soon to be 8 year old.



I think I want a 28 gauge for my youngest son. The 20 that my oldest son has is a little to big for him with to much kick, his 410 is a joke. I am having a hard time finding one that would work for him. Supposedly they made a 1100 field model from Remington a few years ago that had a 21 inch barrel, that is what I want. Charles Daly use to make a youth 28 gauge that had a 22 inch barrel, that would also work. Could I buy a standard 1100 28 gauge and get a 21 inch barrel aftermarket that would shoot steel shot? In a perfect world I would rather something turnkey. I want a semi-auto due to less recoil and so he can shoot more than one shot when he gets older.

My oldest son is a big kid so the 20 gauge was fine for him, My youngest son still only weighs 52lbs. Matthew was 70Lbs or more at this age.

A 410 single barrel is a tough gun for a kid to use for waterfowl. I didn't mention this but the gun will be used for duck hunting. He wants to be able to shoot next year and not just help me work the dog and identify ducks.

Can't seem to find anyone with anything in stock....

If one of you has a used gun in a similar model or can put me in contact with someone that would be great as well.

I bought a 28 auto with a 26 in. barrel recently and my 8 yo daughter handles it well. I bought it from g & h in geuydan. They had a few different guns in 28.

Was the 26 not to long for her? What brand and model did you go with?

just a thought.......Beretta's 20 youth is really really a soft shooter.........there are expensive, but the price of 28 steel is brutal as well........

it may make the difference financially to go with the 20 beretta.....I bit the bullet for both my boys and we cut one stock to fit my youngest who was small (back then LOL) and we have since found a full stock on line.....

So now we have some great guns, three different stock lengths and nephews and nieces coming up to share them with.

That's tough situation. Just have to be very careful with barrels that short. I would look for an auto 28gauge and leave a longer barrel. The barrel length shouldn't be as much of an issue as the stock length. I'd cut the stock down to make sure it fits him, and worry about the barrel after that. 410's are a joke like you said.

Since you already have a 20 for your older son, if you have to cut the stock it's not that big of a deal. You could always buy an aftermarket stock later down the road along with a longer barrel and use it for dove hunting or teal season.

Casey, my brother has a youth berretta 20 if you want to let him try it I can make arrangements to get it to lake charles. We have access to skeet machine and a place to shoot if you want. Just PM me if you want to go that route.

Cutting the stock is the worst thing you can do for balance. Buy Mason a youth beretta 20 and go with it. Adult guns cut down will not fit someone as small in stature as he is. Browning also makes a custom lady's model that is basically a youth gun but just don't tell him.

Check Gun Broker and Guns America. Remington made a .28 ga 1100 field gun with a straight stock. I have a .20ga in it. Very nice shooting gun. I think its called the upland model. I found mine at Gander Mountain in Houston. If you think a double would be ok CZ makes a very nice .28 in the Bobwhite model. I have a .20 ga in that one as well. If you don't mind spending a little more for a nice .28 Ga double look at the Connecticut Arms RBL in .28 ga. That is the one I'm going to get if I get a .28 ga. Collectors Firearms off of Richmond Ave in Houston usually has a good selection and might have what you are looking for in stock. If not they can get it for you usually. I've bought quite a few guns from them throught the years also.

As far as shells I'd just get him a case of Bismuth to shoot through it at ducks. Much more effective for that smaller gauge shotgun.

Maybe you should look at the youth Tri-Star Shotguns Academy sells. They are excellent guns for kids and it won't bother you to much when they outgrow them. Both of my younger sons have these and they come with an adult stock too.

It is a benelli and it is a little long. She shoots it but it is too long for her to hunt safely with. I decided that when she can be 100% safe with this gun then she can use it hunting.

The Charles Daly 600 28 gauge youth model looks perfect. They no longer make guns so I have been looking on gun broker and a couple of other spots with no luck. They were a cheap gun you could buy at Wal-Mart but they are no where to be found anymore. I think Akkar started making them again but also went out of business.

I bought 4 10 for my 5 year old grandson last year gave 400 and a joke this year bought tri star 20 auto with 24 barrel and xtra ext and but 500 he will shoulder and shot three shot well worh it
