Under easy tracking conditions, I really like the solid copper Barnes bullets. They will expand and exit and leave a good blood trail. Penetration will never fail to be adequate.

But (you may have noticed), there are a lot of swamps and snakes and tough tracking situations in our fair state. For those deals, I prefer a jacketed lead bullet that offers some fragmentation while still likely to penetrate well. The 60 grain Nosler Partition is a good choice.

But in the .223 world, it's more a matter of avoiding the bad choices: varmint bullets, FMJ, steel core. It's also a matter of hitting what you aim at. Put a good bullet in the center of the chest and take home your venison.

Maybe I've been misinformed, but I was under the impression that caliber was illegal-too small for deer hunting in La.

Legal calibers in LA is .22 centerfire or larger. (no rim fire)
.223 is on the small side for deer, but Math Geek gave you great advice is that's what you choose to use.

I've seen many deer and hogs dead because of a 223/5.56mm. Yeah it is on the small side but will do a great job given the trigger man/woman does their job. I prefer a larger caliber (7mm 08) in my case but I would never feel under gunned with my AR. 60grn Hornady spire point bullets loaded with 24 grns of AA2460 will nearly penatrate 3/8 steel plates at 25 yards. At 150 yards it will turn a crow inside out. You can just lay him out flat on a table. He is spread like warm butter.

My son has shot two deer with a bolt action .223. Both were about 150 yards from the stand. He uses Hornady American Whitetail 60gr. Neither deer had a blood trail but neither deer went far. They fell dead at about 10to 20 yards off of the road. Both shots were placed right behind the shoulder. Shot placement is very critical with that caliber rifle.
