Estimate at how long the chimney pipe is above the roof line? Is you chimney pipe bare or is it enclosed above the roof line?

Same here Raymond.
House is three years old and can't use the fireplace at all. Rep has been to the house three times and they changed the top on it 2 times. This unit was bought locally and installed by the same people. They suggested doors so I bought them. Closed, it did fine, but the minute I opened them up the house filled up with smoke. It got so hot that the gaskets on the door melted and the glass fell off. The guy finally said that it is in the fine print all houses dont draft and they are not responsible if it doesn't. Now several thousand dollars later and 1/4 of my living room space taken up, that thing is nothing but a stocking hanger.

In my living room and bed room fireplaces I have gas logs. We don't use them much because of having young kids in the house but they work good when we do fire em up. Just doesn't have the same smell as a wood burner.

Hey Raymond, is the central unit on while you are trying to fire it up? The pull of the fans will draft from the chimney. I have that problem when lighting my fireplace. The central has to be off till the heat has built up.

Not a bad smell at all. I just like at my dads the way their wood burning stove smells. More camp fire like. Nice to have though in case the central takes a ****.

This is not your complete problem. Plenty of homes including mine have had the central unit on or kick on while the wood burning fireplace is going. Your central unit should not pull in smoke, as you described in the original post. Keep investigating.
