Default Boat Title Question????

Ok, Going look at a boat in New Orleans tomorrrow and do not want to make two trips if I can help it. It is a used boat with papers that I will more than likely buy. I have been on the phone waiting for WLF for 20mins to ask, What needs to happen paperwork wise for this transaction? Do I have to get it Notarized? What else do I need to do? Thanks

If the boat is paid for, it will be easy.
Get the owner to sign the back of the registration, then bring the paperwork to the LDWF office near you and pick up a duplicate paperwork.
Fill out, send in one copy with the fee stated on the paper, usually around $8 for registration transfer.
The other copy is your temp. registration till you get the permanent one.

Trailer is a different monster. You need to get the registration signed and notorized, then bring the the DMV. I hate going there. Then they transfer registration, and give you a new one. After you pay them.

If the boat/motor/trailer still is not paid for, you will have to work with the bank or lending company. Not fun either.

Up untill a few years ago only the trailer was registered so a notarized bill of sale is a good idea . So depending on age may be no papers ...

Yeah I will be fully paying for it. So for the trailer this may sound dumb but both parties have to be there right(at notary)?

Normally, yes......DO NOT put the entire sell price on the trailer!!! Price the trailer at 500 bucks at the notary cause you will have to pay tax on it

If the seller is cool try act of donation (tax exempt)

Also I would reccomend going to. ldwf instead of mail. I waited a good 3 months for my papers and stickers...

Also we had a stick with ldwf becausethey needed a bill of sale..notarized...title wasn't good enough

I'm going through this right now, Pre 2009 boats don't have titles your bill of sale is your title pretty much, got to go to LDWF when I get in and try to get this ish strait.

They won't let you do an act of donation no mo I don't think

Act of donation has to be from a family member

depends....on who does it...but as stated above, it no longer exists.

also, if it does include a title, make sure the seller is the person on the title...if not you will be taxed double.
