Default New Surface drive (need advice)

A guy I work with is looking at buying a new surface drive and boat (combination). He is unsure on what brand of motor to buy. He has been researching all of them but was looking for some first hand opinions on them.

This is the ones he has looked at:
-Go Devil
-Mud Buddy
-Gator Tail
-Hyperdrive
-Pro Drive

Thanks for your help...

Pro Drive all the way. There is nothing like having a full power reverse. I have a 36 hp pro drive on their 18X48 boat and it works great.

Stay away from those in red and spend the extra $$$ and get a boat made by the motor mfg.

hyperdrive is a mudbuddy and they are JUNK. I had one and would not recommend that to anyone. I replaced it with a gatortail and was 100% satisfied would buy another one in a heartbeat. Prodrive is good too.

thing is prodrive people are going to swear by PD and Gatortail people are gonna swear by gatortail. so moral is try them both and pick what you like and fits your needs best.

I love gatortail and would only buy another one of them. the instant reverse is worth its weight in gold when trailering

We run the Mudbuddy Hyperdrives at our duck camp ,and trust me they are junk . I spend almost as much time working on them as we do running them. I had heard Prodrive was having some seal and bearing issues in the lower units ,so u may wanna look into it some more. We had a demo from Go Devil and it wasnt all that great either. There is a website for surface drives Mudmotortalk.com there is a bunch of info there . Hope this helps out.

GO with Gator tail all the way. Both my sons have them; my youngest is always in the promo videos for Gator Tail. Tell Kyle (Owner) in Loreaville that Cody W. from Abbeville sent you!

I use a kohler motor everyday and can assure you they are the best motors made, we have one at work that has over 13,000 hours on it. If I was to buy a surface drive it would have a kohler motor.

Thanks for the help guys I will pass on the information.

He currently has a Mudbuddy and has had nothing but problems with it, and is just tired of fighting with it and wants to buy something new.

Thanks again...

Seriously, I've run both pro drive e and Gatorade tail.......pro drives full reverse don't count for ****......by the time you manually turn the lower unit around, the Gatorade tail is long gone......not my opinion....FACT

well, Im a pro drive man, them gator tails would never hold up where we hunt with all the stumps, we also have some mud that I would like to see them gator tails stop in and see what that instant reverse does. Oh, and by the way, you dont have to manually turn the lower unit around anymore, they made a lil switch for dat,can get it done in about 3 seconds now. PRO DRIVE, its not just a motor, its a lifestyle.

The guy that owns Gator Tail's(Kyle Broussard) camp is right down the road from mine in Pecan Island. One of my buddies is from Loreauville so I have met him a few times. He is a real nice guy. If I would buy one, that's who I would go with. Seems like any problems u would have, he would really help u out. And I think he was the pioneer of surface drive motors.

Me personally, I would test drive them all. Look at the options. Reverse, Trim, horsepower, etc.. I have worked on all of them for a couple years and all use the same motors, Kohler or Briggs. I like Briggs as you can practically get parts anywhere. As for the drives, it depends where you will run it. Real soup mud, Prodrive or Mudbuddy, Plenty grass Mudbuddy. Need reverse quick for frogging, only Gatortail. Also these motors are very easy to get more performance out of them. Mudbuddy is the only one you can change gearing in to adapt to the horses also. Take your time and try all the ones out there
