Pretty much most birds are protected if they are not a gamebird or 'nuisance' bird (blackbird, grackles, crows). Some introduced species like starlings, pigeons, house sparrows, and a few others aren't protected. Lots of protected birds have fallen victim to a bb or pellet gun on a bird feeder though

Forget what organization (Audubon?) but one of their goals is to keep common birds common. Passenger pigeons once numbered in the billions (with a b) and went extinct pretty quick but that was loss of habitat. Believe it or not in the 1950s the brown pelican was extirpated from Louisiana and almost went extinct. Hard to believe as common as they are now. Alligators have a similar success story

I think most of us honed our marksman skills at a young age with birds and a bb gun. Mom and grandma weren't always happy about it though.lol

I have ate lots of birds in my day that was taken by a pellet gun... we would cook em on a camp fire in our barn yard!!!

Passenger pigeon went extinct due to over hunting. At least that's what they taught in my wildlife class, not due to habitat loss. Punt guns did some damage. Carolina parakeet went extinct due to harvest and habitat loss.

I've never killed one and never eaten one...

But they are pretty darn tasty from what I hear

and yes many many robins still get killed south of I-10 in Louisiana

it may be hard for some to believe, but there are those of us who also notice other aspects of the natural world while we are fishing. My binocs are never more than arms reach away on my boat or in my blind.
Yes there are birds out here and some are quite cool to just watch.

Being aware of your surroundings is important. I had to same opinion until I fished with a biologist and he pointed out the many things that make our area special. From oyster catchers to terrapins to Boobies. It makes the experience a wonderful learning experience.
