Default Suzuki vs Mercury 4 stroke advice

Ok guys need your help I'm building another redfish tournament boat and was putting a optimax 75 2 stroke but they just called and said it was discontinued so my options are now a 90 Suzuki 4 stroke or Mercury 4 stroke.

Guides and people building boat are swearing about these Suzuki just wanted some other advice if any from you guy

Thanks in advance

go with the Suzuki. I've seen several boats with them and they've all been pleased. if you're still looking for 2 stroke power tohatsu makes a bulletproof engine. They have a 75 and 90

I run a 90 Yamaha 2 stroke... I've been a Yamaha follower since 1998.( 3 yamaha's) Mercury prior to that.

I've been entertaining my first bay boat purchase. My first gut reaction was ...get a Yammy.

That being said I've been asking and digging around myself and all I keep hearing is Suzuki , Suzuki , and Suzuki.

It's been overwhelming to hear Suzuki come up so many times. Fuel efficiency and reliability keeps being the main reasons. Every now and then I hear how well the lower unit gearing helps work with an array of props.

The old saying where there's smoke there has to fire ... Looks like I may be on the Suzuki train on my next purchase.

Good luck with your search !

Yamaha four stroke sounds like a 2 stroke nx to suzuki for stroke. 😆

full: I was sent a Mercury 4 cylinder, 4 stroke, efi, 61 ci, 40hp motor with the standard gearcase and a 60hp ecu to test. That was around 2000 or 2001 somewhere about then. The motor burned a valve about 18 months ago. Mercury asked me to pull the data from the ecu for them to see. The motor had over 2400 hours operation, 97% of the time was at 100% throttle. It hit the 6250 rpm rev limiter over 460 times, shut down on overheat over 360 times. Finally burned a valve. NEVER changed a single part on that motor, NOT ONE! Changed oil and filter once a year and ran Valvoline full synthetic oil. I think that is probably more hours of torture than 99% of people put an outboard through. I would own another in a heartbeat. Only reason I am running a tohatsu now is that unit I had is not available to the public configured like I had it. Their 40hp 4 cylinder comes only with a bigfoot gear case. I have never owned a Suzuki outboard, so I can't speak about them. I can say that Mercury was the toughest unit I ever owned. And it was fast. I ran it first on a 1552 WeldBilt boat. After I broke all the welds in that boat, I went to a 1556 Edge Performance hull. Loaded with 3 batteries, 82# motorguide, 2 men, all fishing gear, it would run 45 mph all day in the marsh. It had grunt and top end power. Switching to the 53 ci Tohatsu 40/50 4 stroke, I now run 40mph with the same load.I am totally happy with the tohatsu, I was thrilled with the mercury.

The Mercury 75/90/115 HP motors came out last year which may be why you haven't heard a lot about them. They are built on the same design as the 150 HP Mercury that came out with several years ago. The Mercury 150 HP motor has been a great motor. The 75/90/115 HP motors are 2.1 L. The Suzuki has 1.5L displacement so the Mercury is 40% larger. Suzuki uses a 2.0 L motor for their 115.

The Suzuki, like the Yamaha, is a DOHC motor which gives better breathing at top RPM's. That is why they can have smaller displacement, they make their power up top at higher RPM's, max 6000 RPM's. The Suzuki 90 HP motors go to 6300 RPM's. The Mercury is a SOHC which uses more displacement to make the HP, not more RPM's, max 5500 RPM's. The Mercury 90/115 motors go to 6000 RPM's. On hole shot the Mercury's extra displacement should make more power over the smaller high revving Suzuki's.

The dry weight of the Suzuki is 341# vs 359# for the Mercury so not a lot of difference.

I am biased, I have bought a 90 HP Mercury but have not finished building my boat to put it on. I hope Cajun Christian will give us his thoughts on what I have said about displacement vs RPM's on hole shot.

On water performance may be closer than you think ...

Output power at the prop shaft is a major factor in performance and efficiency.
Performance may not be exact according to engine displacement alone and given max RPM's.

Lower unit gearing on a Mercury Optimax 90 is 2.33:1

Suzuki four stroke 90 is 2.59:1

Suzuki having the lower gear ratio ...

Numbers provided by Google ... don't burn me to the steak if Google is wrong !

Just food for thought !

Then the final factor is choosing the "correct" prop for THAT boat it's powering.

Two identical boats may be rigged or loaded with weight differently requiring two different props given identical motors ...

Then you still have to play with motor mounting height or running height (jack plate) to tune this tool ... Prop.

It kills me to hear of someone purchasing a boat and them trying only one prop and then blaming brand "x" outboard as being poor performing or inefficient.

I literally played with 5 different props for my boat. Notice I said boat not motor.

It's worth it's weight in gold to have a good relationship with your local prop shop.

I have 3 props I kept and each behave very noticeably different ...
