short shaft vs. long shaft

whats the difference, well i know that one is longer than the other but whats the pros and cons of them

The transom height is measured from the top of the transom, (where the engine bolts on), straight down to the keel, (bottom middle), of the boat. A 15'' transom would require a shortshaft engine. Beside length, there are some that say you will have a power difference with a short shaft vs. a long shaft. Personally I don't believe it.

One thing that I have found with a long shaft motor is you have less water come over the transom when backing down. Also the long shaft motor is a little heavier, but probably not enough to notice once on the boat.
