How exactly does this happen? Not ragging, just curious so I can possibly prevent this or carry a spare prop.

I've seen a prop shaft sheer off on a 40 4 stoke merc. Normal operating, didn't strike anything. Running along and just twisted off. The prop shaft is actually 2 piece. Where they are welded you could tell it was Never a good weld. After some research I found that this was a known issue.

Running a 225 Merc ProXS, the prop shaft broke. I hit nothing, the motor did not come out of the water, the boat did not get pushed to the side or bottom out. We were running about 35-40 mph when it happened. I simply heard a thump noise at the same time as the rmps shooting up. I have heard the rmp sound before, so I had an idea. First brought the boat to neutral then turned it off, raised the motor and saw the missing prop.
After we got back on the trailer, I noticed the missing prop shaft. Got the boat to Redmonds and just received word that Mercury warranty is covering the issue. The down side is we have no idea where the prop and part are...I failed to save the spot on the GPS. |
