FlagUS Slick ol' slug

had a quick question....

im looking to shoot a deer with my shotgun this year. its an older 870 smoothbore with a mod choke. i wanna use a 3" slug and im just wondering if anyone has any recommendations before i go spend a bunch of money testing different kinds. ive been thinking the Remington 3" rifled lead slug is gonna be the winner but not positive. any help or ideas is appreciated!!!

for me i had good luck with the winchester pumpkin ball style rifled slugs and the brenekke rifled sabot jobs... both shot good for me up in maryland out of a smoothbore gun.

with that said it seems like every gun has its favorite..

if you want to make it purr, you can pick up a rifled slug barrel with cantelever scope mount and then run remington copper solids through it. You will then be good out to 150 yards or so with sub 2 inch groups.

You can get a rifled choke but they don't work quite as well.

Default Slugs through a modified choke

I have been told to shoot through improved cylinder or less, but if a old gun with modified barrel it might be a improved cylinder by now.

Had to shoot slug guns for years in Ohio. A centerfire rifle is so far superior in every way, it isn't even funny. Smooth bore slug guns may be good to 50 yards if the wind isn't blowing. I'd prefer a 22LR for deer hunting to a slug gun if I had to kill deer or starve. Ended up using muzzleloaders most seasons, as these were at least reliable to 125 yards, even when the wind was blowing.

I have read that smooth bores need rifled slugs, my experiance I hunted hogs in shotgun only areas and used winchester 2 3/4" 20ga smooth bore and shooting like i normally do at 75 yards i can hit almost center of a milk jug every shot. When it does connect its devistating!

Yea I bought some rifled slugs and shot it. Was shooting a foot low at 20 yards... I'll just have to invest in a 35 wheelen(?) next year. Luckily I have a bow and now rifle season is open.

I've never seen them yet. Maybe if I'd put my fishing pole down and hunt I'd be in the loop lol. Sounds like a bad mofo though.
