Default Newbie intro with a question on a Blackjack

Hi Folks,

I've been trolling for infomation on boats on here and 2cool for months. Made the decision to quit all my other hobbys that take me away from my kids too much and get back to fishing since they are getting to the age that they can somewhat fish with me having to fix mess's every 5 seconds.

Neverthless I bought a Blackjack last week from LAM and like the others on here had a great buying experiance. Kyles a good guy and has really treated me well.

The question I have is where you guys have installed your transducers and if you have had problems with where they are. I installed a Garmin 740s this weekend with a Airman p79 adjustable in the bottem of the boat thru the access port in the rear well. It was the only place I could find and sucked to do. Haven't tried it yet but was curious about others experiances in this boat.

Shane

Shane, I don't have an answer to your question but I would say that most transducers seem to be installed on the transom.

Did you get the White w/Black stripe BlackJack? If so, that's a very nice boat you just bought!

Post up some pics. We're always looking for more Boat Porn!!!

Yes sir I bought that one. I love it so far. Looked good until the Black and Tan one showed up. That Black hull is sexy.

I was avoiding installing a transom mount but will if the shoot thru hull doesn't work.

Thanks

I have a Humminbird 898c SI on my BlackJack and had the transducer mounted centered, directly under my jackplate on the transom (external, not thru hull). The transducer is a little different than what comes with a normal sonar unit as this unit has Side Imaging capability. It will not work thru-hull and it has to be mounted externally. It had to be mounted so that nothing on the transom such as trim tabs, motor, jack plate, etc., could obstruct the Side Imaging sonar beam. The only downfall of my unit is that because of the way the transducer had to be mounted, it is only touching the water and giving me a sonar signal at slow speeds. Once I get on step, the transducer is slightly out of the water and will not give me depth readings until I slow down again. This is not a big deal for me because I fish Big Lake 99% of the time and I am very familiar with the waters. I usually don't use my sonar until I am moving very slowly anyway. If I was always fishing new areas I don't know that I would have gone with this setup. You shouldn't run across the issue that I have with a normal transducer though. I can't say anything about installing a thru hull transducer on the BlackJack since that's not what I have, but just by looking in the rear access ports it seems as if it won't be an easy task.

P.S.

(The black and tan one is mine! )

They looked good side by side at LAM the other day.

I figure that spot on the transom would be good for a Side Scan which will be coming in the near future. I figure with plenty of dash why not have a GPS and Sonar on seperate screeens.

Just get an HDS 10 and split screens.

Both of y'alls boats are works of art. I've never seen an ugly BlackJack!!!

Thought about going with the HDS10 but like the touchscreen on the garmin. Does anyone make a good Side Scan without the GPS?

I have a thru hull on my triton and I like it better than a transom mount. But I don't have side scan or anything
