Small boat advice - Hackberry area

I'm always taking the kids and wife out fishing off the bank or at the jetties in Cameron. I have a 16 foot Alumacraft I've wanted to take out around the Hackberry area but am skittish because I don't know the area. Is there a place that any of you would feel safe in a smaller boat? I'm not too concerned with a huge catch, I just want the kids to catch a few things they have never caught. My wife's family used to have a camp on Holly Beach until Rita, after meeting her and hanging out in that area that's about the only place we go......haha.

Joe's cove and the bayous that feed into it should be easy enough.

I've fished all may life from 15' and 16' down there. Pick your days for big Lake and west cove. Joe's cove and black lake are pretty good area's. Heck, on the right days I've been all over big Lake and on the Gulf side of the jetties. Just be smart and don't take chances. You'll be fine.

BD..... I have the same boat and I go all over the lake, if the winds are not too bad.

If the winds are above 10 mph the lake gets a little ruff for a 16 foot boat, but it can be safely done. When the winds get up to 15 mph on Big Lake, I have to slow way down to keep from getting beat up.

Watch the wind direction and launch where you can stay in "protected" areas to fish.

Fishing with your family..... I would plan fishing trips on days when the winds are less than 10 mph.

I remember hearing of some small boat fishing around choupique bayou, a little north of hackberry.
Also the canals feeding into west cove (as mentioned above).

I drop my 14 x 48 in West Cove canal and am in West Cove in 5 minutes if that. If its to windy in West Cove you can travel maybe 1/2 mile from the boat ramp and hook a left into the marsh.

We fish the jetties (inside and out) all the time in a 16 ft alumacraft. We slay the bull reds and gafftops. Pick your days.

I fish choupique a lot also. Catch a lot of reds and flounder. Specks at times as well.

i had a 1750 aluminum bass boat with a 40hp and I fished all over big lake. Even on windy days you can fish up and down the ship channel. If its calm fish Turners Bay or any other area close to the ship channel in case the winds pick up.

Thanks guys! I had plans on working on the boat and our water heater started talking a dump followed by burning up a capacitor on the a/c. This weekend was a wash. Maybe next weekend.

I'm also a newbie to Big Lake, I have a 16' bass boat. I plan to come down this weekend for the first time. Please tell me where Joe's cove is?
I plan to launch from hog island and try west cove for trout, then back in the marsh for some reds. I'm not asking for honey holes just some advice to come out and catch some fish.

I would check the weather for this weekend. From hog island gully head east into the ship channel and then north. It will be the first cut on the left with rocks. You will see the camps in the cove.

If you want to fish Joe's Cove, easier to launch there. See this thread. I attached pictures there.
