White Trout

[Goooh]

What happened to them? The top ten largest white trout caught in Louisiana range from 7lbs up to 11lbs, but all of these records are from the 70's and nobody has touched the rope 10 with a big white trout since.

Why all of a sudden did they just turn into little pickle by-catch?

We used to catch some big ones at the rigs on the tiger shoals. We went out a few times late fall/early winter just for them. I always heard during winter they will be on the same rigs the specs are on during the summer. They are fun to catch when they are stacked up in deep water.

Good question. I haven't seen a white trout over 2lbs in all my life.

About 10 years ago I went on a charter in lake p and caught several over 2 and up to 3. Those were by far the biggest I had ever seen. Most nowadays are 10"

About 10-15 years ago I had a few deep water channel honey holes between that area and lake borgne. During the summer, if we had good tide movement it was all you wanted to catch and they were real nice size.

They have some holes like that in shark bayou too, or the offshoots off of shark bayou.

I brought a guy who didn't know the difference between a spec and a white one time, we caught 100 or more in no time. Dude thought I was a hero. They make good fish tacos too, just don't freeze well.

You got to put them in an ice slush when you catch them and in an ice slush as you fillet them ... When you freeze them put in zip bag with water and when you defrost put that in front of a fan and they defrost fast....Don't run under water....Myself I like to whole fry 11 inchers and fillet up to 14 inch....Above that I throw back....I just personally find they get a strong taste...They used to be on the western end of lake P. in late summer and fall with bull croakers but I haven't caught any since katrina.....

We have picked up some 3-4lbes offshore in 100' out of GI before fishing on the bottom.

If you're going to freeze them it's better to vacuum seal them fresh (& dry).

Two different species, the Gulf White Trout and the Sandtrout. The sandtrout are found nearshore and inshore and seldom live over 3 years. They grow fast but die young, a 10" in June will be 14" by October. We used to catch lots of them under lights at night.

The Gulf White Trout is the one that needs to be studied. Their numbers are way down.

The Gulf White Trout is the one that needs to be studied. Their numbers are way down.

Could you cite a peer reviewed study or two on this? It goes against anything I've read to this point.
