Default Potato cannon bait launcher for fishing the beach

Potato cannon bait launcher for fishing the beach

We're putting together a potato cannon bait launcher for fishing the beach. Most of the ones we've seen on the internet are pneumatic rather than combustion driven. Any reason why a combustion driven won't work? They are probably too loud for Grand Isle or Pensacola, but might be ok for Holly Beach or Rutherford, no?

Anyone ever use these (pneumatic or combustion)? We can already cast 250 ft with 12' ugly stiks, so we're really looking to launch bait 400-600 feet. Launching mullet seems simple enough, but are there any ideas for launching crab without freezing it in a block of ice?

All insights and discussion appreciated.

Combustion might compromise the integrity of your fishing line. What are the cons associated with the pneumatic launcher that are steering you towards developing a combustion version?

I already have a combustion version. I have lots of experience with it and it is thoroughly wrung out. Been launching spuds for years. Good point about the line though.

If you make your own leaders you can just make one that is longer than the barrel on your launcher, let it rip, and see what happens.

Imagine your line getting wrapped around the tip of the rod while firing.

Freakin right its crazy. MG is thinking like a redneck instead of scientist. Can we pool together some $ and get him a trophy if this sheet works?

maybe you are just overthinking this.

if the goal is truly fishing and not just having fun, why not just use a remote control boat to carry your bait out to where you want it and it will be in must better condition when it arrives there?

no need to seal your bait in ice and blast it off into space to get it far enough out there and as someone mentioned, if your line gets tangled or wrapped around the pole it can be a very bad situation.

there are durable remote control boats that can take rough water without getting swamped and have good range for the controls so I think its a good alternative.

You obviously have never met MG. He's an awesome dude just smarter than all of us combined. Over thinking stuff is his job. If he wants to do it it will be done.

Here's an article on some of our earlier work with spud cannons:

I'm coming to believe compressed air is the way to go here.

Trying to avoid buying a bigger boat to feed my habit of catching bull reds. I like sitting on the beach while fishing.
